The Santa Cruz OM Pre War is a great reminder of why Richard Hoover and his team have remained at the top of the acoustic world for nearly 50 years. As part of the company’s upcoming 50th anniversary collection, this model keeps things refreshingly simple: a classic OM platform, understated appointments, and the kind of refined build quality that makes Santa Cruz special. This example features a Sitka spruce top paired with Indian rosewood back and sides, black binding, a clean black-and-white rosette, pearl fingerboard dots, and the original Santa Cruz bridge shape. The only real nod to the anniversary is a subtle “50” on the heelcap.
What makes the OM Pre War so appealing is how effortlessly it delivers. The gentle V neck profile gives it just enough vintage character, while the long scale and 1 3/4" nut width keep it comfortable and responsive in a modern way. Tonally, it has everything players hope for from a great OM: balance, focus, sustain, rich overtones, and impressive dynamic range.
