Named for the legendary Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, the Collings Winfield is a dreadnought built for flatpickers who play hard and expect their guitar to keep up.

The Voice

A stiff Adirondack spruce top delivers the headroom and snap behind every driving crosspicked run, while an enlarged sound hole pushes projection even further. Beneath it, a pre-war scalloped X-brace in Adirondack spruce, with no tongue brace, follows the pattern of the earliest 14-fret dreadnoughts. East Indian rosewood back and sides add depth and richness, so all that power never costs you tone.

The Feel

The Honduran mahogany neck has a modified V profile that rewards a firm grip, with a fully adjustable truss rod and hybrid mortise and tenon joint for rock-solid stability. The ebony fingerboard has no inlay, just clean playing real estate, and a 14"-26" compound radius makes chording easy up high and bends clean down low. A 25 1/2" scale, 1 23/32" bone nut, medium nickel-silver frets, and Waverly tuners (16:1) complete the setup.

The Look

Ivoroid body binding, herringbone purfling, a zipper backstrip, and an ivoroid and tortoise rosette give it a handsome, working-guitar face, finished with a dalmatian pickguard and an ebony peghead veneer carrying the mother-of-pearl Collings logo. The body wears high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, the neck high gloss polyester resin.

Ready to Play

An ebony belly-style bridge with a cutthrough bone saddle, MOP-dotted ebony pins, D’Addario EJ-17 strings (.013-.056), and a deluxe TKL hardshell case.
